Belmont High School

From the Principal's Desk

Friday, September 20th, 2024

Dear BHS Students and Families,

It was wonderful to see many of you yesterday at back to school night. As always, it was great to observe parents and guardians living their students' schedules in fast forward! Thank you for bringing a good vibe to the evening!

A reminder for students attending the football game tonight that there is a $5 entry price for students, and that no bags or drinks are allowed inside the gates.

I have reminded all students about school safety at our opening day assemblies. It is very important that students and visitors are using only the front door during the school day, and at no time should anyone be opening a door to let people into the building. For parents and visitors coming into the BMHS campus, a reminder that you should bring an ID with you for the check in process. As you may know, we use Raptor visitor management software to check visitors against publicly available offender databases, and to keep track of visitors. Please enter the high school entrance if you are here on high school business, and the middle school entrance for middle school business. Finally, we encourage students and families to say something if you see or hear something. Students are encouraged to speak to guidance, administration, or a trusted adult where they have safety concerns. If a concern comes to light after hours, you can call the Belmont police department 24 hours a day at  617-484-1212  The Belmont police have been posting police details around the BMHS campus this year, and that practice will continue for the remainder of the month. This is a proactive presence, and not a response to a threat or concern.

A Message From Our Assistant Superintendent

Hello Belmont School Leaders,

We are actively engaging our community in developing a Portrait of a Graduate, a collective vision that articulates our aspirations for every student in Belmont. Our Portrait of a Graduate will serve as North Star for our schools, bringing our community together with a shared vision.

You are a valued member of our community, and I need your voice and perspective. I invite you to join our Portrait Design Team, and share ongoing input, and together inform our Portrait of a Graduate. For students this is a community service opportunity.

Over the next few months, the Portrait Design Team will explore the following questions:

·  What are the hopes, dreams, and aspirations that our community has for our young people?

·  What are the skills and mindsets that our children need for success in this rapidly changing and complex world?

·  What are the implications for the design of the learning experiences—and equitable access to those experiences—we provide in our school systems?

Save these dates! Our Portrait Design Team will meet four times to design the Portrait of a Graduate, and each meeting builds upon the other:

·  Meeting 1: 10/29/ 3:30-6:00 at Location tbd

·  Meeting 2: 10/30/ 6:30-8:30 at Location tbd

·  Meeting 3: 11/21/ 6:30-8:30 at Location tbd

·  Meeting 4: 12/16/ 3:30-5:30 at Location tbd

We want our Portrait of a Graduate to be locally developed and globally positioned. I hope that you’ll bring your unique perspective to this collaborative process. Our shared aspiration is that all of our students have an educational experience that prepares them to be lifelong learners and contributors today and tomorrow.

Will you join our Portrait Design Team? Please use this form to register. And, don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Warmly,

Lucia

Athletics

On Saturday morning, September 14th 2024, beloved Coach Bob Guidi passed away unexpectedly.  Bob was part of our athletic family for two decades, including Freshman Football, Freshman Baseball, and Boys BMS Basketball last year.  Coach Brown and I both had the pleasure of having Bob coach hundreds of our student athletes on our staff for 2 decades.  As a retired math teacher, Bob continued coaching three high school seasons a year, all while playing golf or tennis daily, dancing weekend, and spending 2-3 days a week volunteering at his neighboring nursing home playing the piano at lunch.

Bob's 60 years of coaching would be difficult to surpass in both games coached and love shared.  I cannot remember a week that went by that didn't include one of Bob's former students or athletes paying a visit to the bench.  These visits included opposing coaches, officials/umpires, administrators, or parents in the stands.  All with a smile and a story to share.

Belmont is extremely fortunate to have had Bob serve our families and he will be greatly missed.

Football

The Marauder Football program is ready to redeem themselves after a tough loss against Shawseen, one of the top 15 teams in the state. Our defense showed great strength by holding the Rams scoreless until late in the second quarter. This week, we are excited to bounce back against a very experienced Cambridge football team that we believe we match up well against. With our second home game coming up, the Marauder football players are determined to continue their bounce back and secure a win.

Golf

The golf team regained momentum this week with two convincing wins against Burlington at home (44-28) and Wilmington on the road (46-26).  Several new players got into the starting lineup this week and had success, showing the depth of our team.  We are now 6-1 with more challenges ahead with an out-of-conference matchup against Andover and conference matchups against Reading and Melrose.

Girls Soccer

The girls varsity soccer team had another strong performance against Arlington with a 2-2 draw and still undefeated. We have a tough game at soccer night on Saturday against a great Woburn side . But the whole team is excited and ready go.

Boys Soccer

The team continued their strong season with a bounce back win on Thursday night defeating CRLS 2-1. Daniel Liu and Daniel Chang were the goal scorers. Owen Filler and Thomas Borkowski were standouts on the defensive side of the ball. The Boys Soccer team is excited for Soccer Night against Woburn on Saturday night at 6:30 pm.

Girls Volleyball

Varsity volleyball picked up two wins on Monday vs Arlington and Wednesday vs Woburn.  In the Woburn match, senior captain Wenxi Wang was on fire hitting 21 for 22 with 13 kills, while her teammates went wild on the sidelines.  Our record is now 4-3.

Girls Swimming and Diving

Our team had a fun, competitive meet against Andover on Tuesday. We had girls qualify for Sectionals and States in individual events, and all 3 relays. We look forward to another fun and competitive meet against our biggest rival Lexington, today! (Friday).

Boys Cross Country

Boys’ XC had a decisive win vs Winchester on Tuesday, with all four senior captains and freshman Noah Geiger rounding out the team’s top five placings.  Big shout-out to all the Belmont fans as well, as there were MANY in support, even at an away meet.  Reading is next; our adrenaline is sky-high, and our fear is low.

Girls Cross Country

Girls cross country faced Winchester at Horn Pond on Tuesday afternoon. Despite the warm weather for ideal running, junior Kira van Kelsted took the win over a formidable Winchester pack of runners. The team saw many personal best performances across the board suggesting that their hard training is paying off. Up next, Belmont looks forward to a competitive contest with Reading High School at home. Come cheer on the runners at Rock Meadow next Tuesday afternoon!

Field Hockey

Varsity field hockey is now 4-2 after two wins against Arlington and Woburn this week.  The team is playing well and younger players, like Kendall Readan (hat trick against Woburn) are starting to show up on the field.  Junior varsity is also 4-2 with a solid game against Arlington.  Maddie Pennock has been putting the ball in the net with amazing consistency.  The freshmen team is 2-1.  They won a battle in Brookline last night winning 1-0 with a goal from Emily Loftus.

Belmont Wellness Coalition

Our first Parenting Group of the academic year meets on Wed., Sept., 25 at 7:00 PM.

We will check in on the start of the school year.
