Belmont High School

From the Principal's Desk

Friday, October 25th, 2024

Dear BHS Students and Families,

This year, Belmont High School stopped allowing cell phone use in the classroom. Nearly two months into our experiment, the results are better than expected. Looking back on my daily classroom visits this year, I can count on one hand the number of cell phones that I have seen in classrooms. This is a far cry from previous years, where phones were as much a part of the classroom landscape as they are in any other setting in the modern world. Now, phone hotels are full as students and teachers set devices aside to focus on class. The result is that people are more present, as evidenced by increased conversation, engagement, and awareness. Last year, classrooms were often silent before the start of the lesson as students scrolled on their phones for a final few seconds. Now, there is some chatting. It feels different.

A couple of week’s ago, I surveyed the staff to see how things are going from the teacher perspective. This week, I would be grateful is parents and students can complete a short survey HERE. The instructional leadership team will review the feedback from the survey, as we evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the policy, and plan for the future.

PTSO News

Save the Date! Please join us Wednesday, Nov. 13, 7pm in the BHS Library for a conversation with Supt. Jill Geiser. Superintendent Geiser is attending PTO/A meetings this fall to discuss the district's Strategic Plan 2024-2027. The development of this plan started with the steering committee last spring, who created the mission, vision, and core values with input and feedback from the community. From there, the strategic plan was developed by the Leadership Team. Presented to the School Committee on September 24, this plan acts as a guide for district improvement. At the PTSO meeting, parents/guardians will have an opportunity to learn and ask questions about the goals of the district. In addition to the Strategic Plan, the Superintendent will also engage in a general discussion about school safety in the district.

Students: Look for our banner and come find the PTSO table on Halloween for a holiday surprise! Brought to you by the PTSO Acts of Kindness committee.
