Belmont High School

From the Principal's Desk

Friday, January 17th, 2025

Dear BHS Students and Families,

I hope that you all have a good long weekend, and make some time to reflect upon the words and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year, I have taken particular inspiration from King’s The Our God is Marching On speech (March 25,1965), which contains his powerful message that the arc of the universe “bends towards justice”:

“I come to say to you this afternoon, however difficult the moment, however frustrating the hour, it will not be long, because ‘truth crushed to earth will rise again.’ How long? Not long! Because ‘no lie can live forever.’ How long? Not long! Because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

We know from history that injustice is a constant theme in human affairs, and that there are periods of history when injustice is particularly acute. Here, King reminds us to keep working for justice as an inevitable outcome, and to not give up.

Even though King said that the journey to justice “will not be long” many years ago, we still struggle with racism and equity in our schools and our society today. I appreciate the partnerships in Belmont, and the efforts of the community to continue to work towards equity and justice. I look forward to continuing the work with all of you.

Isaac Taylor, Principal

All Night Party 2025

All Night Party 2025 Planning Meeting 1/22
Belmont has a 50-year tradition of hosting a post-graduation ALL NIGHT PARTY for the graduating senior class. The party provides the graduates with a fun and safe way to celebrate with their classmates. This year's ANP will take place on Saturday, June 7 from 9 PM to 5 AM on Sunday. We are looking for volunteers to participate in all aspects of planning this year's party while fundraising for next year's.

We will hold a planning meeting in the Belmont High School cafeteria on Wednesday, January 22 at 7:00 pm.

The Lady Marauders are currently 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Middlesex League. Freshman Sarah Geller has been a starter in all 10 contests, making big plays and continues to be a pest on the defensive end. Senior Linda Sheng has been leading the team in scoring. And Juniors Sophia McClendon and Sophia Peng have poured in clutch 3 pointers in crunch time during our last several games. Senior guards Gabby Orfanos and Ryan Shapazian have been leading the show and making big plays on both ends of the floor.

Girls Indoor Track

The girls had a strong week of practice getting ready for the final dual meet of the season on Monday 1/20. Come support the team! 9am at The Track at New Balance.

Girls Hockey

The Girls Varsity Hockey team had a successful week with 2 more wins against Middlesex League teams.  Last Saturday they beat Arlington 2-1 behind strong goaltending by Jil Costa and a short handed goal by Mackenzie Tierney that was the game winner.  A mid-week game against a tough Woburn team ended in a 3-1 win.  Junior Mackenzie Clarke had 2 goals and Senior Sadie Taylor had the other.  The girls remain undefeated with an overall record of 7-0-1.  Next up is a home game this Saturday against Lexington.

Ski (Alpine)

Excellent week for the BHS Ski team – steady improvement with all racers.  We saw a tremendous improvement with the Boys JV team this week who took 5 of the top 9 slots!  New team members made it on the varsity squad!  Anoush McCarthy finished 2nd and our very own Rhys Harteveldt getting his first 3rd place podium spot.  Competition is hot.

All racers were videoed so that they can compare their movements to pros and we’re running gates at practice.  I'm very excited about the improvements of all & expect we'll continue to see standings improve as our weeks go on!

Boys Basketball

After dropping a tough home game last friday against Woburn 43-45, the Marauders bounced back Tuesday with a nice win at Burlington HS in OT 56-52. Led by Jr. Andre Chavushian (17 points) and Sr. Dame Lilla (16 points), the Marauders picked up their 1st win of the season. On Friday, the boys host Lexington High School at 5:45pm part of a double header with the Lady Marauders basketball team.

Boys

Boys Indoor Track

The Boys Indoor Track team has been hard at work this week training for the end of the season. They will be competing in the MSTCA Division 2 James Kalperis Relays Championship on January 18th. They have some strong teams competing in the 4 x 50yd dash, the 4 x 200m relay, the sprint medley relay, and the distance medley relay. For the first time in a while, they also have very strong athletes competing in the long jump and high jump relays. Beyond the Relays meet, the team is preparing for their fifth and final duel meet - on January 20th against Arlington. They hope to put up a good fight and have many strong individual performances.

Indoor Track

Boys Hockey

Boys varsity ice hockey faced two tough league opponents this week. First game against Arlington was a hard fought, defensive battle with the marauders winning 2-1. Goalie Ethan Bauer made several key saves during the game. Freshman Thomas Courtney scored his first varsity goal which proved to be the winning tally. Next up was an offensive battle with league rival Woburn the line of Adam Bauer, Liam, Guilderson and Leo Packard combined for seven goals three by Guilderson three by Packard and one by Bauer. The entire team contributed to both wins. The team is off until next Wednesday against Burlington high school at the Burlington ice Palace.

Boys Swim

This week we held onto our undefeated record. An impressive 6-0 record. We had an exciting tri meet with Wellesley and Duxbury. Congratulations Ben Wu qualifying for states in the 200 Free and William Qin qualifying for states in the 100 breaststroke. Our 400 relay with David Chen, Ben Wu, Captain Thomas Borkowski, and Ethan Gong crushed the state qualifying time. Tonight we look to maintain our record as we race Brookline High School.

Wrestling

Belmont Wrestling had two matches this week. First up, on Tuesday, was Watertown, our town rivals. Although Belmont fought hard, Watertown escaped with the victory. Belmont did not have much time to rest, however, as we were slated to host Woburn High Wrestling on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Belmont Wrestling has been dealing with injuries and sickness so we did not go into the meet at full strength. This weekend, we have the Woburn Invitational Tournament at Woburn High School on Saturday and a JV-Only tournament at Reading Memorial High School on Monday.  After some healing and recovery, there is no doubt we will be back to our full strength and take it to the competition this weekend.

2025 WGBH High School Quiz Show

As the coach for Belmont’s High School Quiz Show team, I’d like to invite you to join us for the taping. Free tickets are available on the GBH Quiz Show website here.
