Dear BHS Students and Families,
Over the past few years, we have received a lot of feedback about our grade 9-11 academic celebrations. Traditionally, we have had an awards ceremony in June where we give awards from each of the subjects and guidance. Much of the feedback that we have received centers around the late date of the awards, and the difficulty in attending the ceremony which conflicts with many students events (e.g. sports, performances, events of siblings).
In order to address this feedback, we are looking to award 9-11 Academic Celebrations differently this year. Instead of the awards ceremony at the end of the year, we are asking teachers to nominate students each quarter. This will both enable us to celebrate more students and allow for the celebrations to occur throughout the year instead of at a very busy time at the end of the year, where many students aren't able to make the ceremony. Each quarter, we are asking teachers to nominate a student for a combination of academic performance and one of our values. Academic performance could mean effort, growth, and achievement. This first quarter is academic performance and kindness. Students who receive an award will receive a certificate during an X block, and there will be group and individual pictures to share with families. We believe that this will be a better approach to 9-11 awards, and we will review this initiative at the end of the year. The senior awards will take place as usual at the end of the year, as part of the senior calendar of events.
