Dear BHS Students and Families,
Earlier today, another swastika was found in a boys’ bathroom. Combined with the incident in the cafeteria earlier last week, this makes clear that we must address these acts of hate directly, thoughtfully, and as a community.
Next Wednesday, December 17, all students will attend a D-block assembly led by Debbie Coltin from the Lappin Foundation. Her presentation will address the swastikas found at the school. This program has been used successfully in many schools across the region to help students understand the impact of hateful symbols and why speaking up matters.
I know this comes close to winter break and with limited notice, but it’s important that we respond directly and promptly to incidents of hate. As symbols and language of hate become more visible in society, we have a responsibility to learn, reflect, and reaffirm the values of respect and inclusion that guide our school community.
I also want to acknowledge that, over the past year, we have received reports of hurtful and discriminatory language affecting multiple groups of students, including the use of racial slurs and anti-LGBTQIA+ language. Our Instructional Leadership Team will be exploring opportunities during January’s course selection day and March’s community day to continue these important conversations.
Schedule for the day (more details to come):
• C block will end 10 minutes early. Juniors and seniors will go directly to the auditorium; 9th and 10th graders will go to lunch.
• At 10:45, 9th and 10th graders will report to the auditorium, and 11th and 12th graders will be dismissed for lunch.
• Dismissal timing:
11th and 12th graders will be dismissed from the assembly about 10 minutes into E block.
9th and 10th graders will go to E block at the regular time.
