Dear BHS Students and Families,
Yesterday, as part of Black History Month spirit week, students put stuck their favourite quotes from contemporary and historic Black figures on classroom doors around the school. One that stuck out to me was from bell hooks, who prefers her name to be uncapitalized: “No Black woman writer in the culture can write ‘too much.” Indeed, no woman writer can write ‘too much.’ No woman has ever written enough.” I am proud of all the students and staff who have contributed to marking Black history in a meaningful way this month. Education is the best way to uplift communities and counter hate.
At the same time, I am disheartened that we continue to see hate speech around this school. This week, the “N” word has been carved into two separate toilet stalls. Following the assembly on antisemitism, it was reported that an antisemitic joke was made in the hallway. I have also had reports of biased language being used in classrooms which is causing community members to feel unwelcome and unsafe. On the one hand, I am grateful that people are coming forward with detailed information about the bias and hate speech they are encountering in the school, and in some cases pushing back in the moment. On the other hand, hate speech and biased language goes against our core community values of equity, kindness, and responsibility. When anyone is made to feel hatred or exclusion, it prevents our whole community from coming together. Where we are able to identify people responsible for these actions, we hold them accountable. But it is only through education, naming and mitigating harm, and reinforcing our values that we can try to break the cycle of hate. I hope that you will join me in this continuing work.
I hope you all enjoy your break! Isaac Taylor Principal |
