Belmont High School

From the Principal's Desk

Friday, May 2nd, 2025

Dear BHS Students and Families,

With the end of the year approaching, prom, senior cruise, and all of the many events that mark the close of the school year are on the horizon. With that in mind, this year we held our “pre-prom” safety assembly in person for students. The state police sponsored a presentation for us, which turned out to be both highly engaging and informative (see HERE). I learned a lot myself about distracted driving, and it was a good reminder to pay attention to the road. Something that stuck out for me was thinking about ways to be a good passenger, such as answering texts for the driver, or reminding other passengers to buckle up. We often correctly remind young drivers to stay off their phone while behind the wheel, but it is also a good reminder to adults, including myself, that we are all safer if we keep our eyes and our attention focused on our surroundings as we drive.

Boys Outdoor Track

Boys took on Reading in Reading, and despite a late bus and heavy afternoon traffic causing us to arrive just as the meet started, our athletes jumped off the bus and were ready to go with only about 2 minutes to warm up! Sophomore standout Lincoln Correia WON his heat in the 400m hurdles, scoring 5 points for the team. Hugh Goulding was not far behind, finishing 3rd and earning 1 point for the team. Freshman Esmael Peavey had a fantastic night, setting a huge PR of 5’10” in the high jump, scoring 5 points and setting the highest mark of the meet. He also ran the 100 meter dash in 12.03, which would have won him the varsity heat, although he ran JV. Tomas Wolff scored 1 point by placing 3rd in the 200 meter dash. Senior Eli Meretta ran a gutsy one mile race in 4:39 to place 3rd and earn a point for the team. Freshman Noah Geiger set a new PR in the 2 mile (9:57), placing second and scoring 3 points. Freshman Marvin Mendoza set a new PR in discus (86’11”) and scored 1 point. Leonard Dai scored 1 point by placing 3rd in long jump. Malcolm Were placed second in triple jump and earned 3 points for the team. Many of the freshman and sophomore boys who have qualified are heading to --- tomorrow for the Lou Tozzi Frosh/Soph Invitational Meet. A few of our highest performers are going to the Weston Twilight Invitational Meet on Saturday to compete against some of the best athletes in the state. Let’s go, Marauders!

Boys Lacrosse

The boys lacrosse team came back from April vacation with a very exciting and hard fought win against Newton South, outlasting the Lion’s 9-8. Goalie Garen Sandler came up huge for the Marauders as did senior captain Michael Mahoney. The team is looking forward to a big Friday night clash against the Wilmington Wildcats. The junior varsity program continues to shine and they now sit at 7-1 following a big win at Burlington on Wednesday.

Boys Rugby

Twenty-five members of the boy's varsity & junior varsity teams participated in the Club's 6th international tour. This year's sojourn took them to northern Italy - the heart and hotbed of Italian rugby - to tour, train with A.S. Rugby Milano, and play a full match against Villorba Rugby Club. The trip was a smashing success with cultural exchange aplenty. The lads returned exhausted and invigorated and put their education to good use as they defeated Weymouth Rugby 34-10 (varsity) and 40-7 (junior varsity). The teams have their bye week as they recover and prepare for their final regular season matches against Boston College High School & Catholic Memorial High School over the next few weeks.

After just one practice coming off vacation week, C-Squad took on Concord-Carlisle and came away with an impressive 53-15 win! Coaches were very pleased with the efforts across the board from all players. They look ahead to St. John’s Prep next week.

Rugby

Boys Tennis

The Boys Tennis team had a tough schedule waiting for them after spring break with matches against powerhouses Lexington and Winchester on Monday and Wednesday. After dropping those contests, however, they rallied to a spectacular 3-2 victory Thursday at Burlington. Senior Captain Henry Moriarty and  freshman Graham Coradeschi won a nail biting 3 set victory at 1st doubles, Senior Captain Soyam Pokharel and sophomore Dorsey Mitchell won convincingly at second doubles, and freshman Jack Moriarty, in his first go at 3rd singles, won a 2 set victory to secure the team victory. Junior Brady Chan, in his first go at 2nd singles, had the longest match of the day with an epic 3-set duel that kept the fans entertained for 3 hours. The Boys hope to build on this encouraging win next week when they take on Wilmington Monday at home.

Tennis

Ultimate Frisbee

The Ultimate Frisbee team came back from April vacation with a very exciting and hard fought win against Wellesley, outlasting their counterparts 6-5. Junior Avery Walsh came up huge for the Grilled Cheesers, accounting for 2 of the 6 points, and was named Player of the Game.  Sophomore Leo Orbanes was also solid on defense in a supporting role. The Varsity and JV teams are looking forward to hosting Lincoln-Sudbury Thursday afternoon, where we might see double Reillys on the field.

Boys Volleyball

The boys volleyball team picked up the momentum coming out of a practice-filled spring break with an away match against Wakefield. Varsity captain Liam Sinclair broke into the double digits with 10 kills and 3 service aces to lead his team to victory in three straight sets against Wakefield. JV captain Jonathan Tarja also led his team to a clean sweep in two sets. Belmont will be on the road again on Thursday for a rematch against Woburn. Belmont varsity narrowly lost to Woburn, 2-3 earlier in April, and is anxious for a rematch.

Softball

The varsity softball team had two big wins over vacation week beating Lexington 2-0 and Winchester 16-6.  Sophomore pitcher Olivia Ormond pitched a no hitter in the Lexington victory! Pictured below is the latest player of the week for the varsity softball team freshman Janna Feinberg, sporting the player of the week bling!

softball

JV Softball is building the program with 17 student athletes on the roster this year. New and returning players are making contributions all over the field, including Katherine Edmonds at shortstop, Gloria Warinner at catcher, and Lily Friedman throwing most of the innings at pitcher so far this season. When Lily was out, Dylan Bresnihan, Isabella Berberian, and Lauren Marcos threw their first high school softball innings ever. JV will host Stoneham at Clay Pit Field on May 4.

Girls Outdoor Track

Heroes.  Warriors.  Breakers-of-hearts.  These are the folk frequently and furiously frolicking Belmont’s track (forever).  Shout-out this week to freshwomen Bella “Fabulous” Fernandes (throwing and sprinting), Katherine “Super” Saltus (mid-distance) and Claire “Victorious” Viney (sprinting) for scoring some solid points these past days.  By the time they’re seniors, these three will be Olympians, bringing pride, glory, gold medals, and enormous social media influence back to our Belmont community.

Girls Lacrosse

After dropping a heartbreaker at the end of vacation week to Wayland with 1 second remaining, the girls bounced back with a come from behind win to beat Weston on Monday afternoon. Trailing 7-2 in the 3rd quarter the girls rallied to take a 10-8 lead, and hold on for the victory. They then followed that up with a solid Middlesex league victory, beating Burlington 12-8 on Wednesday in the annual Morgan’s Message dedication game (pictured above). The girls have a 6-5 record and are currently 16th in the division 1 power rankings. They take on Wilmington this evening at 5:30pm in Wilmington. Next week is a big week for the team as they travel to #1 ranked North Andover on Wednesday before back to back home games. Friday 5/9 they host Stoneham for Senior Night at 6pm, and Saturday 5/10 will be the Annual Belmont Lacrosse night with the girls hosting Waltham at 4pm on Harris Field, ahead of the boys’ game.

The girls JV team remains undefeated at 10-0 after 2 more convincing wins over Weston and Burlington!

Lacrosse

Girls Rugby

Nineteen members of the girl's program participated in the Club's 6th international tour to Italy and played 10s rugby against an amazing Villorba Rugby Club. The team meal afterwards created connections that will be remembered by all!

On May 1st, the Girls JV team traveled to Lincoln Sudbury and lost a nail biter in the last play of the game! Exceptional rugby played by all. The Varsity Girls team travels tonight to Algonquin Regional High School.

Girls Tennis

The tennis team had a challenging schedule this week with matches against two of the state’s top teams, Lexington and Winchester.  Despite the result, Armela Mahadi had one of her best matches of the season and kept her Lexington opponent in long rallies.  The second doubles pairing of Ingrid Hellsvik and Joy Son had a close battle in Lexington and elevated their game by really putting away shots and earning a lot of quality points.  Belmont lost to Winchester 1-4 on Wednesday, but this was the closest battle against them in nearly 20 years.  Both doubles matches were competitive with the “AC” team of Avery Cai and Amy Chen stretching their opponents to three sets.  Holly Kong also pushed her third singles opponent as well.  Giselle Fond had her strongest win of the season and gutted out a win at second singles.  She is getting better and better with each match.  The team hopes to get back to winning today at the Winn Brook courts against Burlington.
