Belmont High School

From the Principal's Desk

Friday, May 23rd, 2025

Dear BHS Students and Families,

Today we held our annual Memorial Day observance in the auditorium. Tenth grade students and their teachers were joined by members of the Belmont and Waverly VFW post 1272, and the Belmont American Legion. This year, for the first time, 8th grade students (members of the class of 2029) joined the observance. I would like to say a special thank you to Bob Upton, the veteran service officer for the town of Belmont, who shared a few words with our community. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the courage, selflessness, and unwavering dedication exhibited by those who fought and died for our values. It is a day to pay homage to our fallen soldiers and express gratitude for their sacrifices. In exercising the freedoms and responsibilities that our soldiers fought for, we honor their memories.

Also today, seniors celebrated their last day of classes. On behalf of the faculty and staff, I would like to congratulate the members of the class of 2025 for all of their hard work and achievements. I am very proud of the students, and look forward to the graduation exercises on Saturday June 7 at 10:00 on Harris Field. If you would like to attend graduation and do not have tickets, open seating is available on the bleachers.

Support for AB Crew

On Saturday evening, the Arlington-Belmont Crew team suffered a major loss when their truck and trailer, carrying race shells and equipment, overturned in Belmont. The incident, widely shared on news and social media, has deeply impacted our student-athletes.

In response, the community has shown incredible support—students, parents, and local clubs have come together to help. We encourage everyone to continue supporting the AB Crew team, especially the affected students at Belmont High School.

For ways to help, please contact the AB Crew leadership or visit their website.

Baseball

The Marauder 9 Split in their last two games to even their record at 9-9. They lost a tough one Friday night under the lights to the defending State Champs Boston English 7-6. But on Tuesday, in one of the most exciting wins of the season, they had a walk off win against Winchester 7-6 to keep their tournament hopes alive. Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Pat MacKinnon drew a walk, Thomas Dolan ripped a single and Nolan Kelleher got hit by a pitch to load the bases to set up the drama for Casey Regan. With a 2-2 count, he ripped a double to the fence and the speedy Kelleher rounded the bases and slid into home with the winning run. Ryan O’Byrne had two hits and Aiden Broderick pitched 5 solid innings and Craig Deane pitched two shutout innings of relief to pick up the win. The Brendan Grant Tournament will be this weeknd and the weather is already playing a factor. Belmont plays Reading on Saturday at 4:00 at Victory Field in Watertown.  The consolation and Championship games hopefully will be played on Sunday at 10:00 and 12:30 at Brendan Grant Field. Please come down and enjoy some baseball, have a hot dog and root for the Marauders. Please come down and enjoy some baseball, have a hot dog and root for the Marauders.

Boys Outdoor Track

The varsity boys team traveled to Burlington High School on Wednesday night for the Middlesex 12 League Championship. Despite the chilly, drizzly weather, the team rose to the occasion with several standout performances. Noah Geiger earned a medal with a personal record of 4:36.4 in the mile, finishing 8th. Jared Rife placed third in the 2-mile with a time of 9:37.57, also earning a medal. The 4x800m relay team—Jared Rife, Isaac Weng, Elias Campisano, and Noah Geiger—secured sixth place and took home medals as well. Esmael Peavey added to the medal count with a 7th-place finish in the high jump (5'8"). Malcolm Were delivered an impressive triple jump of 41'10", earning second place and a medal. Full meet results are available here.

A few athletes will continue their season at the upcoming divisional meet next week. Congratulations to all athletes who wrapped up their season with this meet, and best of luck to those moving on to the postseason!

Boys Lacrosse

With an electric one goal win against Winchester on Wednesday the boys’ junior varsity lacrosse team, under the leadership of coaches Eric O’Malley and Mike Yucum, finished the season UNDEFEATED in the middlesex league, and with an overall record of 10-1-1. Their one loss came over April break when they had one sub and were missing a number of key positions including their goalie! This is the winningest lacrosse team, jv or varsity, in the history of Belmont Lacrosse. The varsity team is tournament bound for the fifth straight year and will conclude their regular season on Friday, May 22nd at Concord-Carlisle, the game begins at 5:00pm.

Boys Rugby

The boys rugby team is wrapping up the regular season this week. Our Developmental team did not have a match, yet they finished the season playing games and doing fun drills in a celebration of all they accomplished over the past few months.  Our JV and Varsity sides wrap things up Friday night at home and the team would love all the support the community has to offer.  Varsity plays Catholic Memorial at 630pm and this is the first ever contest between our 2 sides. With both teams already qualified for the state tourney, it is certain to be a fun game to watch!  They will be followed by our final JV match of the year who play Monty Tech’s Varsity team in another first for our program as Monty Tech is newly founded and were excited for the opportunity to come to Belmont for a match.  Next Tuesday the MIAA final seedings will be announced and we will learn who we face in the playoffs and the team is excited for it all as we head down the home stretch.

Boys Volleyball - SENIOR DAY TODAY

The boys volleyball teams are on their final week of the season. This season, three other schools in the league have JV-A and JV-B teams, including Winchester. On Monday, the JV-A team was able to take a set from Winchester, 1-2, and the JV-B team swept for their victory. Unfortunately varsity needed a win to advance to championships, but could not defeat Winchester on Monday. The final battle remains for the Marauders on Friday against Westford. This game is also senior night for the Belmont volleyball team, celebrating its four seniors, Captain Liam Sinclair, Captain Larry Zhang, Ali Gilani, and Anson Lei.

Softball

The Belmont Softball team had a busy week. On Sunday the Marauders beat league leading Wakefield 2-1. Sophomore Olivia Ormond pitched a complete game giving up 1 run and striking out 12. On Monday the softball squad celebrated Senior Day by beating Melrose 14-11. That win made the softballers eligible for the state tournament! Then on Tuesday the softballers lost a heartbreaking game to Winchester getting walked off in the 7th. Two games remain in the season with both at home v. Reading and Lexington over the weekend.

Girls Lacrosse

Girls lacrosse went into the final week of the season with two tough league matchups, dropping a heartbreaker to Lexington on Monday (10-9) before beating Winchester on Senior Night (9-5). We finished 3rd place in the Middlesex League with a 9-2 record. The girls travel to Billerica Memorial this evening to wrap up the regular season in search of a 13-7 record. Currently ranked #15 in the MIAA division 1 power rankings the girls will look to host a first round tournament matchup near the end of next week! A highlight of the week was Senior Captain Charlotte Mayall notched her 100th career point on Monday evening. The JV girls look to close out the season tonight as well, they are currently 16-1 overall!!!

Girls Rugby

The Girls Rugby Team has had an outstanding season and  will wrap up their Varsity regular season matches on Friday May 23, at 5:00pm against Cambridge Rindge and Latin. Currently ranked at #1 in the state, the girls will look forward to Tuesday 5/27 when we will find out who we play against in our first playoff match. Congratulations to our 17 graduating seniors who are leading this squad in strength into the post-season.

Our JV team hosted a tournament style celebration of their season on Saturday 5/17 and fielded two sides against opponents Wilbraham-Monson Academy and Lincoln-Sudbury. It was a fantastic morning of rugby for all players pictured below! We look forward to wrapping up our season against Malden-Catholic’s new team next week!

Girls Tennis- Headed to Tournament!!!!

The tennis team faced its toughest part of the schedule by ending the regular season with matches against Lexington, Winchester, and Westford - all top ten programs. The challenges were also compounded by an injury and some illness to team members.  Both Anna Bugarinovic and Katia Polina prioritized the team and stepped in to play varsity matches without any reservations.  Anna was even willing to make the switch to singles at the last minute against Westford, currently ranked #3 in the state.  Despite three losses at the end, the whole team looked impressive and none of their opponents had easy wins.  Holly Kong had her biggest win of the season on Monday against Winchester.  Usually the #3 singles player, Holly moved into the #2 spot and had a grueling match on clay.  She took away her opponent’s power and wore her out with consistency.  The team ended the regular season at 11-8 and is eagerly awaiting the final MIAA power rankings in hopes of a home match in the state tournament.  Tournament play should start late next week.

Ultimate Frisbee - NATIONALLY RANKED!!!!!!

Belmont wrapped up its regular season with a hard-fought 13-9 loss against Lexington, the #3 seed in Massachusetts Division 1 Ultimate Frisbee. Entering the game as the #4 seed, Belmont battled closely with Lexington in what was a fast-paced and competitive matchup between two of the state’s top teams. Despite the loss, the team finishes the regular season with an impressive 9-2 record and plenty of momentum heading into the D1 State Tournament this upcoming weekend. The tournament is a two-day event that will feature the best teams in the state, and Belmont is eager to make a deep run. One of the major highlights from the Lexington game was sophomore Parker Reynolds, who had a breakout performance with several crucial catches and key defensive plays that kept Belmont in the game.
