On Monday, September 30, students and families are invited to the kick-off meeting for the annual 8th Grade Washington, D.C. trip. The kick-off parent information session will be held at 6:00 PM in the BMHS Auditorium. The session is appropriate for both families and students to attend to start talking about planning.
Following the D.C. information session, we will be offering a session on Marijuana, Vaping, and Gummy Use at 7:00-8:30 PM in the same space to support family conversations about substance misuse and abuse. This session is available to all students/families in 7th and 8th grade. As the laws and technology have changed, student access to substances has also changed. Schools and families across the Commonwealth are unfortunately at the forefront of this battle to protect our students. Please join us to learn more.
Session description:
Adolescent substance use has changed as the availability of THC and nicotine products have increased, leaving alcohol as a less common form of intoxication than in previous generations. This presentation will explore physical risk factors, addiction, dependence and social ramifications of these intoxicants in adolescents. Participants will learn about the current trends in recreational intoxication of adolescents, and the availability, use and medical facts about vaping and the importance of educating adolescents about these products.
About the speaker:
Greg West, M.Ed., is a retired Health Education teacher of 30+ years. He has designed and implemented middle and high school Comprehensive Health Education programs as well as courses in emergency medicine. He now presents topics of adolescent health and wellness to high school students as well as offering programs for parents and school personnel through WEPS Education (www.wepsEducation.com).
We are requesting that all families RSVP to attend. This will allow us to plan accurately for session handouts and to arrange the auditorium.
