Now that spring is here, we begin to think about student placement for next year for our current students. During the placement process, we evaluate how the needs of the individual children will be met while trying to create equitable learning groups with groups of children who can work together educationally and socially at each grade level. This balancing act requires attention to academic abilities, social skills, learning styles, personality traits, and class size, among other considerations which may not be readily apparent to parents and families. Our placement process includes asking current classroom teachers to communicate information that they feel should be considered for the next school year. Classroom teachers have a good understanding of their students, including academic, emotional, and social needs.
If you would like to share information about your child’s learning style or any significant aspect of your child’s background which may impact his or her best placement, please briefly submit your thoughts on a survey using this link by Friday, April 18, 2025. Form responses may be shared with teachers. Please note that placement letters are not kept on file from previous years.
Please do not feel there is any advantage in making your perceptions about placement known to us in writing. This is only true and necessary if you have information to share about your child that you do not believe we are aware of already. Equal consideration is given to the needs of every Butler student, regardless of whether or not we have received input from the parents.
All of our teachers are highly qualified and will provide an appropriate education for your child. Parents are asked not to include specific requests for teachers, as they will not be considered during the grouping process. If all specific teacher requests were to be honored, it is very likely that the personality of a class could be overwhelming for both the teacher and the students.
Please trust our professional judgment as we work to provide all of our children with the best possible classroom learning environment.
On May 8th & 9th, Butler Staff will be meeting our future kindergartners and their families. THERE WILL BE NO SCHOOL FOR CURRENT KINDERGARTNERS. This is a chance for the staff to get to know the strengths and areas of growth for our youngest learners. It also provides time for parents and caregivers to meet with a counselor and English Language Educator to share important information. The information gathered will help the school place students into classrooms as well as begin planning how to meet student needs.
As the end of the school year approaches, we realize that it's a busy time of year. You may be moving or enrolling your child in a private or vocational school.
If your child will not be returning to the Butler School this fall, we ask that you kindly notify us by Friday, June 6, 2025.
If you are not leaving Belmont Public Schools, there is nothing you need to do. Please call or email with any questions or concerns.
We are so excited for Butler Color Day 2024 on Wednesday, June 4 (rain date 6/11). This is one of our biggest events of the year, and in order to make this day happen, we need your help. This event runs on Volunteers and LOTS OF THEM! Please save the date, more details forthcoming!

The Dentist visits Kindergarten!
On Thursday April 3rd, Dr. Caterina Raffa from Pediatric Dental Arts in Watertown visited our kindergarten classes. Dr. Raffa brought along her cuddly friend Drago the Dragon to teach our youngest learners about dental hygiene including the function of teeth in chewing and talking, brushing, flossing, and the importance of routine dental visits. Students learned about the different parts of a tooth, how to properly brush teeth, how the foods we eat affect our teeth, and playground and sport safety. Students even had the chance to practice brushing Drago’s big teeth, which was a huge hit!
Kindergarten parents, ask your child something they learned from the dentist and to show you the special gift they received. If your child is in need of dental care, please reach out to Ms Harteveldt.
PACK Week
Last week was PACK week and snacks and lunches were full of colorful fruits and veggies each day. Students and staff were dressed in fun and bright colors to celebrate the color of the day. Even our cafeteria staff joined in the fun by greeting students dressed as fruits and veggies as they entered the cafeteria each day. Students love these guest appearances and are eager to share their healthy and colorful food choices with our traveling fruits and veggies during lunch. A special thanks to the Butler PTA for helping to fund this part of the program.
PACK week is celebrated in our elementary schools each year to encourage children to eat a wider variety of fruits and vegetables. Each day of the week is assigned a different color and promoted during the week by all school announcements, nutrition bulletin boards and posters, activity sheets, and counting colorful foods during snack and lunch. Thank you to all who helped promote this week and make it fun and educational for our students. As we say during PACK week, remember to 'catch a rainbow every day'! Let's keep packing those colorful and healthy foods and promote healthy food choices together.
