Time to look for head lice
There have been reported cases of head lice, this is common in school-aged children. Statistics show that head lice are found in 3-5% of the elementary school population at any given time. Lice are spread by direct head to head contact by crawling and do not fly, hop or jump and in-school transmission is considered rare. Common modes of transmission are family members, overnight guests, and playmates who spent a large amount of time together.
Please take a moment at home to check your child’s hair for head lice and their eggs (also called nits). Work under good light, such as the natural sunlight from sitting by a window or going outdoors. If eyesight is a problem, have a magnifying glass on hand. Use a bright light and magnifier as you methodically check your child.
Use a white hair conditioner, and a good lice comb to detect lice or nits. Detailed instructions for inspecting and treating head lice are available in my office or on the Belmont schools website, under Health Services.
Regular checking at home (at least monthly) dramatically decreases transmission. Make checking for head lice part of your routine hygiene just like brushing one’s teeth.
While the discovery of head lice tends to cause frustration for parents, students, and school staff, lice are not a sign of poor hygiene and do not spread disease. Much of this frustration can be avoided by following simple identification and treatment methods and through good communication with your school nurse. Please know that I am available to help you and your family through this process if needed.
Warm Weather Reminders
The sunshine is coming and so will the sunburns! It is important every day, but especially now with warmer weather, that sunscreen becomes part of the morning routine. Many people don’t realize that the sun in the spring is just as strong as it is in late summer. A sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher applied prior to school will protect your student through the school day, as well as decrease the risk of skin issues later in life. As students are spending more time outside during the school day, please be sure to apply sunscreen before leaving the house each morning.
As students become more active and spend more time outside, they need to increase the amount of fluids they drink. Our school building tends to get warm as summer approaches and students may require more water. We are noticing an increase in students asking for cups for water during the day. Please remember to send your student to school with a clean water bottle each day.
End of the Year Medication Pickup
Please remember that all student medications in the clinic need to be picked up by parents on or before the last day of school or they will be discarded. No medications can be stored in the school over the summer. EpiPens and inhalers that have not been picked up by the last school day will be sent home in your child’s backpack on Friday June 13th. Please feel free to leave them in the front pocket on the backpack for the final two days of school. I am happy to arrange appointments in the fall before school starts for medication drop off and updated health discussions as needed. Feel free to email me if you would like to schedule an appointment. I do check email periodically over the summer but will not be at school until just before the start of school in September.
As always, please reach out if you have questions or concerns.

Each year the graduating class at Butler creates an art project that is installed in the school as a lasting memory of their time at the school. This year our 3rd graders have an unprecedented opportunity to not only create a fun, original art project, but to also give a lasting gift to the school. The 3rd graders will create mosaic tile squares for two benches that will be permanently added to the school grounds.
The Butler School is looking for parent and community representatives for the School Advisory Council. A school council is a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, community members and, at the secondary level, students, required to be established by each school pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C.
Councils are to assist principals by reviewing the school building budget and developing the school improvement plan. Councils' school improvement plans are submitted to the local school committee for review and approval. The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils. School councils are to assist principals in:
Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
Reviewing the annual school building budget
Formulating a school improvement plan
The Butler School Advisory Council meets remotely 4-5 times a year, typically after school or in the evening. Please email the principal if you are interested. jbabson@belmontschools.net
