VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES & NEWS

WAKE UP THE GARDEN EVENT, 4/12

Weather-dependent! (2-4 PM)

Come celebrate Earth Day (a little early) by helping us “wake up” the Butler learning garden. We’ll be planting flowers in front of the school, trimming back last year’s growth, and prepping the soil for this year’s plants. We have plenty of kid- and adult-sized gardening gloves for volunteers to use.

Please contact Kara at thesaberwoods@gmail.com if you're interested or want to learn more.

VOLUNTEER FOR THE PTA for the 2025-2026 SCHOOL YEAR

We have many open coordinator and board positions with the Butler PTA. Check out a list of the descriptions (and commitment level) here.

We are especially in need of:

  • PTA Vice Presidents: The PTA's Vice Presidents support the two co-presidents for a one-year term and are expected to move into the co-president role the following year. A full description of the VP and president are listed in our bylaws. We would love to have you on our team.  Please contact us at butlerpta@gmail.com if you're interested or want to learn more.

  • Bookkeeper: We are looking for a treasurer for the remainder of the year, who can shadow our current Treasurer with deposits, payments, and account reconciliation. The hope is this individual will learn this year and move into the Treasurer role in the future. While a background in accounting is helpful, it is not required.

  • Nominating Committee Chair: The Nominating Committee spearheads the search for filling vacant PTA positions. This coordinator works with the PTA presidents to identify who will remain in their positions the following year and which positions will become vacant. This individual or small group solicits Butler community members to fill these vacant positions.

Have questions? Send an email to butlerpta@gmail.com and we’ll do our best to help.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEER (during school)

  • Come volunteer in the library during your child’s/children’s library time.

  • Our Library Aide Ms. Joanne is preferably looking for parents who can commit to multiple times throughout the year.

  • If you missed orientation, you can still volunteer by:

    • Reading through the Library Training Slides

    • Making sure your CORI and confidentiality paperwork is submitted and up-to-date

    • Signing up via Butler Library’s SignUp page

LITERACY WEEK

What a wonderful week of reading! Big thanks to Butler alum who took the time to read their favorite children’s books to our current Butler students, to Ms Babson for her pajama read, to the author who visited us at Belmont Books and to Amy McCann for bringing this all together.

Butler Alum Read to Current Butler Families –– Big THANKS to Belmont High Schoolers for taking the time to read (via YouTube) to our Butler families!

SNACK DRIVE FOR STAFF

Thank you for stocking the teachers’ lounge with snacks and goodies!

We are all so grateful for your generosity.

ENRICHMENT UPDATE

Our VPs of Enrichment have been working closely with Ms. Babson and Butler staff to ensure our children have in- and out-of-school enrichment opportunities beyond traditional classroom time. Most recently, our 1st graders had a great visit with The Discovery Museum at the end of February for a special Lights and Lasers program!

We are working on several more field trips for our students.

  • Our 3rd graders will visit the MIT Edgerton Museum the first week of May, and they are planning for another field trip at the end of May!

  • Our 2nd graders will visit the Franklin Park Zoo in June.

  • Our 1st graders will have an in school visit from Professor Bugman to learn more about insects!

  • Our Kindergartners will have a visit from Animal Adventures in June as well.

Stay tuned for more info from your child’s teachers! Keep an eye on backpacks for permission slips!

Our PTA funds the majority of these programs, and we will be asking for donations of $5-$10 from the 2nd and 3rd graders to assist in paying for the bus transportation.

Thank you for contributing! (Haven't yet? See below for how to donate.)

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION (DEI)

March brings with it a number of diversity events dedicated to celebrating inclusion! Read below for more information.

  • March is Women's History Month, when we reflect on women's achievements throughout history that advocated for rights and equality.

  • March 1st was Zero Discrimination Day, when we focus on eliminating discrimination in all forms.

  • March 15th was International Day to Combat Islamophobia, when we address the discrimination faced by Muslims, and promote acceptance and tolerance.

  • March 17-23 is Neurodiversity Celebration Week, when we recognize and celebrate the diversity of neurodivergent individuals, such as those with autism, dyslexia, and ADHD

  • March 31st is International Transgender Day of Visibility, when we celebrate those living as transgender and focus on eradicating discrimination.
